Miles Davis 1957-59: Kind of Blue, Porgy and Bess, and more
Cadogan Hall, SW1X 9DQ , [Venue Details]66 years after its release, Kind of Blue (featuring saxophonists John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and pianist Bill Evans) remains the best-selling jazz album of all time with over four million copies sold.
Alongside Miles’s revered quintet and sextet albums of the 1950s his work with arranger and bandleader Gil Evans ranks among the most celebrated collaborations in jazz history. This concert features music from their first two albums together, Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess.
The delicacy of Evans’ impressionistic work on his albums with Davis is breathtaking. Using instruments seldom heard in jazz – oboe, alto and bass flutes, French horns, bass clarinets and tuba – he created a gorgeous backdrop for the solo trumpet.
The role of Miles will be shared by Steve Fishwick (in the small band selections) and Freddie Gavita, winner of Best Trumpet Player at the 2017 British Jazz Awards.
The concert will be presented by music journalist, author and TV presenter David Hepworth.
