Levi Andreassen
1901 Arts Club, SE1 8UE , [Venue Details]The programme opens with Schumann’s Five Pieces in Folkstyle which showcases the virtuosity and lyricism of the double bass in a familiar but varied romantic context.
Following in the programme is Tabakov’s Motivy - a contemporary solo work which presents a large contrast of sounds from the bass in a fusion of contemporary and Romanian folk styles, while also complimenting the ‘folk music’ theme.
Lowell Liebermann’s Double Bass Sonata, which is based on the famous bass soli from Verdi’s Othello (act 4) follows. It is another dark but hopeful piece of music complimenting the two prior works, and continuing with a more contemporary sound world which was introduced by Motivy.
Then, a return to romanticism with Faure’s Elegie, and two pieces which are very well known to musicians and non musicians alike; Debussy’s Beau Soir, and Piazzolla’s Ave Maria.
Finally, Bottesini’s Capriccio di Bravura ends the programme literally and figuratively on a high note with its incredibly operatic and romantic storytelling.
