Trio Lalique - Classical & Jazz Concerts
Pinner Parish Church, HA5 3AA , [Venue Details]Great Piano Trios by Smetana & Tchaikovsky
- Smetana - Piano Trio in G Minor Op. 15
- Tchaikovsky - Piano Trio in A Minor Op. 50
These two wonderful Piano Trios are perhaps the most symphonic in the repertoire for this ensemble, and yet both are also characterised by moments of intimacy and subtlety, alongside their grandeur and power.
The Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote his astonishing work at the age of 31, in memory of his first child, who had died aged 4 – the dark emotions of a grieving father evident from the outset, interspersed with glorious lyrical passages, as well as moments of playful recollection.
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio, composed soon after the 4th Symphony and Eugene Onegin, was also written as a memorial – to his friend Nikolai Rubinstein. He was very ambivalent about combining strings and piano in chamber music, but he surmounted the perceived difficulties expertly in this great composition.
Outside of their work as a trio, Ilya, Yuri and Julia also collaborate in larger chamber music formations as part of the acclaimed London ensemble ChamberMusicBox.
