The Listening Project / Search Engine Quartet
Cafè Oto, E8 3DL , [Venue Details]Two young ensembles taking contrasting approaches to scored music share sets of new pieces from across the experimental / new music / DIY spectrum. Both offer eclectic sets rooted in a spirit of adventure and taking an expanded notion of the score as a jumping-off point.
Formed in 2022, The Listening Project are a London-based collective with a focus on the work of living composers and repertoire from the fringes of the classical canon. Recent projects include 2024's staging of Jeremy Deller's Acid Brass at Goldsmiths, and a residency at The Old Church which featured performances of Cardew, Eastman and Oliveros. The ensemble comprise a shifting lineup of performers under the creative direction of trumpet-player Jack Jones.
Search Engine Quartet consists of Joshua Barfoot, Tom Hardwick-Allan, Kiran Leonard, and Alex McKenzie, and is a project for commissioning, interpreting and performing scores. They have commissioned and performed scores from artists such as Graham Lambkin, Regan Bowering, Rory Salter, Max Syedtollan, Eli Winter, Russell Walker, John Burgess and Ash Reid, Sally Plowman, and Worstie.
Scores have ranged from instructional texts, an oral score delivered via Microsoft Teams, an indie rock song written in MIDI, a one-act play, and other pieces which straddle several of these disparate categories.
