Jason Carr: We Kiss in a Shadow
Crazy Coqs Cabaret, W1F 7ED , [Venue Details]Two-time Tony Award nominee composer/lyricist/orchestrator Jason Carr, well-known at Zédel for accompanying Maria Friedman and Anne Reid, creates a very personal solo show, exploring musicals from a gay perspective.
Expect some Sondheim, Coward, Porter, as well Hollywood composers Hugh Martin and Roger Edens (proverbial and real-life friends of Dorothy), as well as songs from Jason’s own critically-acclaimed shows.
First performed in 2019, Jason has since performed the show for the Turn On Fest at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre.
“The show has many surprises – like the work of queer composer Roger Edens , a much-ignored songwriter who wrote for Ann Miller in On The Town (Prehistoric Man) – funny, rude and in this version with a great virtuoso piano interlude. As Strictly’s Craig would say ‘Fab-u-lous darling’.” – Brian Butler, gscene 2020
“Jason Carr’s score has a darting, feverish urgency that reminded me of Sondheim.” – Michael Billington, The Guardian Six Pictures of Lee Miller, Minerva Theatre 2005
“Jason Carr contributes terrific music and lyrics, with the odd knowing nod to G & S and Sondheim. [It] strikes me as that rarest of phenomena—a genuinely successful new British musical.” – Charles Spencer, Daily Telegraph The Water Babies, Chichester Festival Theatre 2003
