In 1981, he flew to New Orleans, started playing piano at the Maple Leaf Bar, and played with legends like Earl King and Dr. John.
In 1989, he released his first album, Alligator Lips & Dirty Rice, and moved to New York to back New Orleans artists. Cleary studied Afro Cuban music and traveled to Havana and Santiago in the early 90s. Keith Richards introduced him to John Porter, leading to work with Taj Mahal.
In Los Angeles, Cleary joined Bonnie Raitt's band for a decade while touring globally with his band. In 2016, he released Go Go Juice, earning his first GRAMMY. He partnered with John Scofield for worldwide tours and appeared in Martin Scorsese's documentary Red, White & Blue. Cleary's career includes performances and recordings with top artists John Lee Hooker, Eric Clapton, Allen Toussaint, Dr John, and so many more!
