BBC Proms: Boulez and Berio – 20th-Century Giants
Royal Albert Hall, SW7 2AP , [Venue Details]This season we celebrate the careers of 20th-century game-changers Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio, whose inventive, iconoclastic legacies continue to echo through the sounds, styles and techniques of today.
The Ensemble intercontemporain – founded by Boulez in 1976 – and Pierre Bleuse celebrate the pair in a concert full of sonic theatre. Boulez’s tour de force for clarinet, the shadow-duet Dialogue de l’ombre double, meets Berio’s allusive, tragicomic music-drama Recital I, which remixes opera’s history via the composer’s own distinctive imagination.
Tragicomedy also streaks through Berio’s Sequenza V, which prompts a solo trombonist to explore a plethora of unlikely playing (and vocal) techniques.
