BBC Proms: Le Concert Spirituel
Royal Albert Hall, SW7 2AP , [Venue Details]Before there was Tallis’s mighty Spem in alium there was Striggio’s 40-part Mass: a sumptuous Renaissance epic in surround sound. Lost for centuries, it received its contemporary premiere at the 2007 Proms.
Now it returns, in the expert hands of period specialists Le Concert Spirituel under Hervé Niquet. Their musical ritual – a concert recreation of a festal Mass – also includes the ‘heavenly harmony’ of the equally striking (and supersized) Ecce Beatam Lucem, music by Italian 16th and 17th-century composers Benevolo and Coteccia and, as well as motets by Palestrina, whose 500th anniversary falls this year.
Striggio Mass ‘Ecco sì beato giorno 29’
Striggio Motet ‘Ecce beatam lucem’ 8’
Interspersed with works by Benevolo, Corteccia and Palestrina
