Tune-Yards, the music project of Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner, is known for its vibrant fusion of indie pop, Afrobeat and experimental loops.
Emerging with the 2009 album BiRd-BrAiNs, recorded on a handheld recorder, Tune-Yards gained widespread acclaim with w h o k i l l (2011), which featured the breakout hit ‘Bizness’ and won The Village Voice Pazz and Jop critics’ poll that year.
Garbus and Brenner’s music is characterised by layered vocals, polyrhythmic beats and socially conscious lyrics, which tackle themes of race, privilege and politics. Tune-Yards has been praised for its high-energy live performances and innovative production.
Albums like Nikki Nack (2014) and I Can Feel You Creep into My Private Life (2018) further solidified Tune-Yards’ reputation for pushing sonic and lyrical boundaries. The 2021 album Sketchy marked a return to raw, energetic songwriting.
