Brixton Calling
Southwark Playhouse, Southwark Playhouse Main House, SE1 6BD , [Venue Details]Inspired by Simon Parkes’ bestselling memoir ‘Live at the Brixton Academy’. From the director behind the Olivier-Award nominated ‘Cruise’, Bronagh Lagan. With an electric live soundtrack of reggae, punk, rock, and rave.
Brixton Calling is the incredible true story of the 23-year-old who bought a derelict cinema for £1 in 1983, called it The Academy, and built a legendary music venue that changed everything – brought to life on stage for the very first time, just 15 minutes from The Academy’s famous front-door.
“Whenever anyone, anywhere, steps up to a microphone, stands beneath the spotlight, with the intention of telling a story, of telling their story… Everything that follows will, inevitably, be some sort of fiction. Everything, that is, except the music”
With generous support from Arts Council England, the team behind the play is delighted to be working with George and Jamie at The Soulstice Collective, Raw Material Music, and partners across south London, in the spirit of the story, to support the next generation of brilliant creatives.
