Monteverdi Choir & Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique

Cadogan Hall, SW1X 9DQ , [Venue Details]

A thrilling new chapter begins as Jakob Lehmann, one of the most exciting young conductors in historically-inspired performance, makes his debut with the Monteverdi Choir.

Thursday,
2 Oct 2025
@7.30pm

This concert marks the start of a groundbreaking exploration of Gioachino Rossini’s music on period instruments, offering a fresh perspective on the works of this operatic genius.

Rossini’s rarely performed opera Ermione (1819) is one of his best-kept secrets – a vibrant drama set in the aftermath of the Trojan War. The carefully curated sequence of excerpts for this performance showcases dazzling music for soloists, orchestra, and chorus, bringing its emotional intensity to life.Complementing this is Rossini’s passionate Stabat Mater, written much later in his career. Linked thematically to Ermione by the shared motif of motherhood, it juxtaposes Andromache’s grief for her husband Hector and her son in the ruins of Troy, while the Virgin Mary grieves for her son, the crucified Christ.
