Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Tchaikovsky

St John's Smith Square, St John's Church Smith Square, SW1P 3HA , [Venue Details]

A dark and rhapsodic programme exploring love, death, and the depths of the Romantic imagination.

Corinthian Orchestra returns with a compelling programme of vivid emotional depth and dramatic power.

@7.30pm

At its heart lies Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the ‘Pathétique’ – a poignant and intensely personal farewell from one of music’s most heartfelt voices.

Opening the concert is Rachmaninoff’s darkly atmospheric Isle of the Dead, a brooding tone poem inspired by Böcklin’s famous painting, where undulating rhythms and ghostly textures conjure an eerie journey into the afterlife.

In contrast, Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand dazzles with invention and spirit, written for pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm in World War I. Full of rich colours and jazz-inflected rhythms, the concerto is a triumph of human resilience and artistic ingenuity.

Conducted by Leonard Elschenbroich and featuring acclaimed pianist Anna Vinnitskaya, this concert promises an evening of intensity, imagination and extraordinary music-making from some of the early 20th century’s most expressive voices.
