Stefan George’s ‘Transcendence’, with its famous opening line, ‘Ich fühle luft von anderem planeten’ (‘I feel air from another planet’), influenced a generation of younger artists, Schoenberg and Wassily Kandinsky among them. Stellar soprano Barbara Hannigan joins the Belcea Quartet in Schoenberg’s ethereal setting of George’s symbolist verse and in the heartbreaking expressionism of Hindemith’s Melancholie, composed in memory of a friend killed during the First World War.
