Tereza Catarov Quintet
Pizza Express Jazz Club, W1D 3RW , [Venue Details]A Romanian-born, London-based singer, composer and storyteller, Tereza brings a powerful, evocative blend of modern jazz sensibilities and the haunting beauty of Balkan folk traditions. Her music is a soul-stirring journey through memory, heritage, and the lives of women who came before her
With roots in both Romanian and Bulgarian cultures, she weaves ancient melodies and intricate rhythms into bold jazz arrangements - music that feels both timeless and contemporary, full of nuance, passion, and unmistakable identity. Her debut album, Koren - which received a 4-star review in Jazzwise and Songlines magazine- honours the voices of the women who shaped her early life, particularly her grandmothers and the broader community of elders from her childhood.
Tereza Catarov is a Romanian-born, London-based singer, pianist, composer, and storyteller whose work traces a powerful emotional and cultural arc between contemporary jazz and the folk traditions of the Balkans and Eastern Europe. With roots in both Romanian and Bulgarian heritage, her music is shaped by the voices, songs, and rituals she grew up with—transformed through a modern creative lens that embraces improvisation, cinematic harmony, and rhythmic complexity.
From a young age, Tereza was immersed in music: she began singing at folk festivals at age three and studied classical piano from the age of five.
