We have the terribly sad duty today of announcing the death of Gillian duCharme, the charismatic former Headmistress who is surely one of the most important figures in Benenden School’s history.

In 1985 Mrs duCharme became the fourth Headmistress at Benenden and led the School until 2000.

She was educated at Girton College, Cambridge and spent 19 years on the East Coast of the United States, working in the independent school sector.

Arriving from Manhattan in the contrasting environment of Benenden’s rural location, Mrs duCharme once described her years at Benenden as “thrills and spills from the very first day”, epitomised by the 1987 storm which ripped through the site early in her tenure, leading her to reflect that “Benenden people are pretty intrepid”.
