Ghanaian Independence Day Celebration
“Jimi Hendrix watched them rehearse, Stevie Wonder joined them on drums, and Fela Kuti partied with them in Lagos…” The Guardian
This Ghanaian Independence Day, we celebrate with Osibisa, one of the most important bands in the history of Afro rock.
Formed in London in 1969 by four African and three Caribbean musicians, including founding members from Ghana, Osibisa were true pioneers. They became the first Black band to break The Marquee Club in 1971, reached the UK charts in 1976, and helped shape a new global sound by blending African rhythms, Caribbean grooves, funk, jazz, rock, Latin and highlife.
Songs like Sunshine Day, Welcome Home and Music for Gong Gong have become lasting anthems, still heard on stages around the world.
Their influence runs deep, with artists such as Santana, Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Johnny Nash and Bob Marley all citing Osibisa as an inspiration.
At The Fox & Firkin, the band bring their unmistakable mix of driving percussion, soaring horns and rich arrangements, celebrating Ghana’s independence through music that changed the world.
Support comes from Kay Slice and his band live & direct
