A Viennese Journey

The Henrietta Barnett School, The Hall , NW11 7BN , [Venue Details]

When Ariel Lanyi first appeared at Mill Hill Music Club in 2015, he was just sixteen: newly arrived from Israel to study at the Royal Academy of Music, and already playing with the poise and imagination of a far more seasoned artist.

@7.30pm

Since then, his career has unfolded with remarkable distinction, from prize-winning success at the Leeds International Piano Competition to the Prix Serdang, awarded by a panel chaired by Rudolf Buchbinder in recognition of a young pianist’s achievements and future promise.

His return to Mill Hill offers a programme that feels almost like a journey through the life of the piano itself. Haydn’s G major Sonata opens the evening with clarity, wit and conversational grace: music that delights in surprise while never losing its elegance. Berg’s single-movement Piano Sonata then carries us into a very different sound world — intensely expressive, richly chromatic, and poised on the edge between late Romanticism and the modern age.

After the interval comes one of the great monuments of the keyboard repertoire: Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. What begins as a simple, rather ordinary waltz is transformed into a vast landscape of humour, drama, tenderness, parody and transcendence. In Beethoven’s hands, a modest little tune becomes a universe — and in Ariel Lanyi’s, this promises to be an evening of rare insight and imagination.
