Directed from the violin by Simon Blendis, their leader since 2014, they are joined by the gifted young cellist Hugo Svedberg, whose recent successes include major recognition in Sweden and at the Eurovision Young Musicians Competition.
The programme begins in sunlight, with Mozart’s Divertimento in D major, K. 136: the work of a teenage composer already completely at ease with charm, balance and theatrical sparkle. Haydn’s Second Cello Concerto then places the soloist centre stage, not with empty display, but with grace, wit, and a singing nobility that allows the cello to speak with both warmth and brilliance.
After the interval, the mood deepens. Grieg’s Two Elegiac Melodies draw their tenderness from song, turning the string orchestra into a single, breathing voice of memory and longing. Finally, Tchaikovsky’s beloved Serenade for Strings opens its arms wide. Written in conscious homage to Mozart, it combines Classical poise with unmistakably Romantic feeling: sweeping, heartfelt, and full of glowing string sonorities. From Mozartian clarity to Tchaikovskian ardour, this is a programme that celebrates the expressive power of strings in all their colours.
