Passion, Wit and Song
The Henrietta Barnett School, The Hall , NW11 7BN , [Venue Details]Three long-standing friends of Mill Hill Music Club come together for an evening of chamber music rich in character, conversation and colour.
Piers Lane’s elegance and versatility at the piano, Gemma Rosefield’s warm, searching cello playing, and Sarah Williamson’s expressive clarinet voice make this a trio of artists ideally suited to a programme built on musical dialogue.
Beethoven’s “Gassenhauer” Trio opens the evening with wit and charm. Its nickname comes from a popular tune of the day, which Beethoven transforms with the mischief and invention of a young composer already delighting in the possibilities of the clarinet. Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata then moves into a more emotionally charged world: lyrical, restless, sardonic, and unmistakably personal.
After the interval, Weber’s Grand Duo Concertante offers a brilliant partnership between clarinet and piano, full of operatic flair and virtuoso sparkle. The evening closes with Brahms’s autumnal Clarinet Trio, inspired by the playing of Richard Mühlfeld. Here, clarinet, cello and piano seem to breathe as one, in music of deep intimacy, tenderness and late-life reflection.
