String Masterworks

The Henrietta Barnett School, The Hall , NW11 7BN , [Venue Details]

Two quartets meet at Mill Hill for a programme that begins in Classical conversation and ends in a glorious blaze of eight-part sound.

Sunday,
11 Apr 2027
@7.30pm

The Carducci Quartet, long admired for its expressive range and deep command of the chamber repertoire, opens the evening with Beethoven’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 18 No. 1. Youthful, elegant, and already quietly revolutionary, it shows Beethoven testing the boundaries of the quartet, turning polite dialogue into something more urgent, dramatic, and alive.

The Vita Quartet then takes the stage for Dvořák’s American Quartet, written during the composer’s summer in Spillville, Iowa. Its open-hearted melodies and folk-like freshness seem to breathe a warmer air, full of song, sunshine, and homesickness transformed into joy.

After the interval, the two ensembles join forces for Mendelssohn’s extraordinary Octet. Composed when he was just sixteen, it has the sweep of an orchestra and the intimacy of chamber music, with eight players moving in exhilarating unity.

From Beethoven’s searching intensity to Dvořák’s radiant lyricism, the evening builds towards Mendelssohn’s astonishing teenage masterpiece: music that seems to take flight almost from its first note.
