An Evening with New Young Pony Club
Southbank Centre, Purcell Room, SE1 8XX , [Venue Details]After a 12-year hiatus, New Young Pony Club reunite, bringing with them a fantastic mix of guest acts, including Al Doyle, to celebrate their legacy and era-defining sound.
Occupying the space between dancefloor and afterparty, New Young Pony Club created a sound that defined an era and helped usher in a wave of dance-influenced pop with personality and edge.
At the heart of the band, Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence formed a creative partnership, producing three albums between 2007 and 2013 that embodied both the exhilaration and the comedown of the times.
For Meltdown, the original line-up – Bulmer, Spence, Lou Hayter and Sarah Jones – are joined by LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip’s Al Doyle, bringing back together the energy and chemistry that defined the band’s original run.
Emerging from London’s mid-2000s underground, New Young Pony Club (NYPC) broke through with ‘Ice Cream’, a track that came to dominate the indie, new-wave-infused dancefloors of the era.
Their Mercury-nominated debut, Fantastic Playroom (Island Records, 2007), was a record of its moment: taut grooves, deadpan vocals and a synth-heavy post-punk sound shot through with addictive melodies. Tracks like ‘Ice Cream’ and ‘The Bomb’ carried a stripped-back confidence that resonated far beyond the short-lived scene they emerged from.
