Lunchtime Recital: St James’s Chamber Orchestra
Blackheath Halls, Great Hall, SE3 9RQ , [Venue Details]The recently formed St James’s Chamber Orchestra comprises some of the finest young musicians living in London, many of the string players being alumni of the Yehudi Menuhin School.
This programme features two of the great English string orchestra classics, Elgar’s glorious Serenade and Britten’s much-loved Simple Symphony. There are also two concertos: ‘Winter Remembered’ for viola by leading British composer David Matthews, who worked with Britten.
This piece acts as an immensely moving commentary on a Schubert song. This is complemented by Malcolm Arnold’s 1st Flute Concerto, which abounds in exuberance, vitality and humour.
