The ECO will be exploring a wealth of French classical repertoire with Roberto Forés Veses during his time as Principal Guest Conductor, and this first concert pairs works by Bizet and Hahn with one of the most celebrated of Mozart’s Piano Concertos, No. 23, which will be performed by acclaimed pianist Tom Borrow.

The concert also includes a work by contemporary composer Thomas Adès, a composer whose works have been performed by orchestras worldwide. Three Studies from Couperin is a masterful demonstration of orchestration by Adès, and the meticulous style in which these studies are written subtly and dramatically brings to life the essence of Couperin’s intentions.

With a theme centred around Mozart’s time in France, Hahn’s Overture tells the story of Mozart’s fictional adventures in the city of Paris. Bizet was just 17 when he finished working on his First Symphony. He never permitted the piece to be published and, as a result, the piece was discovered only after his death and premiered 80 years after it was composed.
