Keith Jarrett: The Köln Concert

Bold Tendencies, SE15 4TG , [Venue Details]

Organised by 18-year-old Vera Brandes, the iconic Köln Concert was performed by Keith Jarrett on 24 January 1975, at the Opera House in Cologne – at the unconventional slot of 11.30 pm; on a barely functioning baby grand piano; and with entry sold for 4 Deutschmarks (£1.78).

Performing hungry, under rehearsed, and suffering from back pain, Jarett’s performance defied all expectations. Played to a sold out auditorium, the largely improvised recital and legendary concert taping became the best-selling solo jazz album and piano album in history. We are honoured that Keith Jarrett has authorised this special performance played by Maki Namekawa: his chosen interpreter and one of the world’s great pianists who will return to Bold Tendencies for a second year.

American pianist and composer Keith Jarrett (b. 1945) has traversed musical genres – from jazz and jazz fusion, to classical music, gospel, blues and folk. Possessed of absolute pitch, the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame inductee has worked with the likes of Art Blakely, Charles Lloyd and Miles Davis; joining the latter as one of only two jazz performers to win the prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
