An Evening of Chamber Music - Haydn in America

1901 Arts Club, SE1 8UE , [Venue Details]

Welcome to the third in our season of chamber concerts at the 1901 Arts Club, performed by musicians from London and beyond and hosted by bassoonist Miles Chapman.

Wednesday,
17 Jul 2024
@7.30pm

This concert is largely a celebration of 20th Century music from US composers. We start out with Samuel Barber’s evocative Summer Music before moving on to Andre Previn’s Trio for Oboe, bassoon and piano, that he composed for Cynthia DeAlmeida and Nancy Goeres of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (where he was the chief conductor) to perform alongside himself.

After a brief interval we will resume with an arrangement of Haydn’s Symphony No.97 arranged for Flute and Strings. In 1795 as Haydn was leaving London for Vienna, he handed over the rights to his first six London symphonies to John Salomon and in 1796 handed over the rights to the remaining six to exploit all twelve as he saw fit.

Salomon ended up making ‘quintetto’ arrangements to help in disseminating them as far and wide as possible. The 19th century printed handwritten scores went AWOL for nearly a century, but ended up in the US in the hands of Hollywood film-score composer Alfred Newman.

The Waterloo-based music salon comes with cosy seating and an amply stocked bar to quench your thirst during the several breaks and intermissions.

So come along, grab a drink, kick back your heels and melt into some beautiful music.
