Beethoven Dedications: LSO Wind Ensemble

LSO St Lukes, EC1V 9NG , [Venue Details]

An all-Beethoven lunchtime concert puts the LSO Wind Ensemble in the spotlight, giving them a chance to show off their virtuosity in this lively and tuneful repertoire.

Thursday,
24 Oct 2024
@1.00pm

he LSO Wind Ensemble hones in on Beethoven and the key of E-flat major, which he used for the Eroica Symphony and ‘Emperor’ Concerto.

The Sextet is an early work, described on its premiere in the German press as ‘resplendent by reason of its lively melodies, unconstrained harmonies, and a wealth of new and surprising ideas’. The octet was written even earlier, while Beethoven was still in Bonn, for his patron, Archbishop Maximilian Friedrich, who had his own ‘harmonie’ – a wind band that would play during dinner. Beethoven’s music trips along engagingly but it’s more than mere background music, with a wealth of themes and energy. The Rondino is performed as originally intended – as a finale for the Octet.

The challenges of Beethoven’s virtuoso instrumental writing are indeed heroic – especially for horn – but hold no fear for the LSO Wind Ensemble.
