The Witch of Konotop

Hackney Empire, E8 1EJ , [Venue Details]

A play that interweaves folklore, mysticism, and socio-political themes, exploring power, women's strength, independence, and superstitions, while masterfully combining elements of comedy and drama.

7 Apr 2025
@7.30pm

Directed by Ivan Uryvskyi, the play adapts Hryhorii Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s satirical comedy, blending folklore with contemporary themes of power, honesty, and women’s struggle for equality. The minimalist set design by Tetiana Ovsiichuk, the expressive choreography by Olha Semioshkina and folk-inspired songs are presented in Susanna Karpenko’s authorial interpretation and they add depth and authenticity to the performance.

This timeless story, filled with humour and archetypal conflicts between light and darkness, captivates audiences with its sharp cultural and emotional resonance.

Presented by Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre (Ukraine).
