Alan Barnes/Mark Nightingale Sextet

Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]

The 20th Century produced a host of great instrumental jazz tunes, written by masters of the idiom, that endure to this day. These are not songs from musicals but handcrafted jazz classics written as vehicles for the greatest improvisers of their day.

Sunday,
4 May 2025
@1.00pm

Playing a full programme of these well-known tunes, inventively reimagined for the sextet and led by two of the country’s foremost jazz musicians.

Barnes and Nightingale are both well established multi award winning soloists but with the addition of young jazz trumpet phenomenon James Davison this becomes a truly formidable front line. The rhythm section is James Watson on piano, Adam King on bass and Ian Thomas on drums.

Expect a programme of straight ahead jazz arrangements flawlessly played with inspired soling and interspersed with anecdotes and peppered with humour.

"I was relishing the prospect of Barnes’s casually consummate musicianship, deadpan humour (he could be a comedian, if jazz ever fails him), and indomitable belief in a respected place for the music’s rich history in this eclectic and often forgetful world." — John Fordham - The Guardian
