Bassist and band leader Gary Crosby leads his quartet for a special celebration of McCoy Tyner’s seminal album The Real McCoy.

A pivotal member of John Coltrane’s quartet in the early 60s. Tyner’s style of playing, and improvisation, worked as an ideal foil to Coltrane, transitioning from bop to what became known as modern jazz. By the time they had recorded A Love Supreme in ’64, Tyner was already releasing albums with his trio. The following year as Coltrane was heading in a more avant-garde direction, Tyler left the group and chose to focus on his own recordings.

The Real McCoy was released in 1967 and is arguably the pinnacle of piano led jazz, cited as an inspiration by many pianists and still regularly listed as an ‘essential listen’ in jazz chronicles today.
Gary Crosby explains the impact he feels Tyner had:
“McCoy Tyner was a maestro – and if you want proof of that, then ask yourself why John Coltrane didn’t work with another pianist between 1960 and ’65. If Tyner wasn’t available then Coltrane played the gig with no piano."
