The Ellington Piano Project – Eastbourne 1973 Reimagined

Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]

Fifty years after Duke Ellington’s legendary final performance at Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre, a new project brings that historic night back to life.

Sunday,
1 Feb 2026
@1.00pm

The Ellington Piano Project, led by acclaimed bassist Arnie Somogyi and pianist/arranger Mark Edwards, pays tribute to Ellington’s artistry with a fresh interpretation, having been recorded on the very piano Ellington played in 1973.

The show features a stellar line-up: Somogyi on double bass, Edwards on piano, Alex Garnett on tenor saxophone, Matthew Holmes on drums, and celebrated vocalist Sara Oschlag, whose soulful renditions echo Ellington’s own love for lyrical expression. There will be selections from the 13-track collection blending six Ellington/Strayhorn classics, including “Black and Tan Fantasy” and “My Little Brown Book”, with new compositions and improvised interludes inspired by Ellington’s genius.

Described by critics as “a brilliant light on Ellington’s legacy”, the project is more than a recording, it’s a cultural homage.
