A University of Miami–trained musician, Watson earned his real‑world “doctorate” as musical director of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers from 1977–1981, contributing to 14 recordings - more than any other Messenger in the group’s storied 35‑year history.

Throughout his early career, Watson collaborated with jazz giants including Max Roach, Louis Hayes, George Coleman, and Sam Rivers, as well as legendary vocalists such as Joe Williams, Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, and Carmen Lundy. His acclaimed acoustic quintet Horizon, co‑founded with Curtis Lundy and Victor Lewis, became one of the defining small groups of the 1980s and ’90s, releasing celebrated albums on Blue Note and Columbia.

Watson’s discography spans more than 40 albums as a leader, including the classic Love Remains, the GRAMMY‑nominated big‑band album Tailor Made, and the film score for Robert De Niro’s A Bronx Tale. His later projects include The Gates BBQ Suite, honouring his Kansas City roots, and socially resonant works such as Check Cashing Day. His partnership with Smoke Sessions Records produced recent releases including Keepin’ It Real.
