The collaboration stretches back to 2001, when Barker joined Cobham’s quintet to record The Art of Five and tour internationally. Now, Guy’s big band arrangements meet Billy’s quartet, featuring stellar soloists including saxophonist Chris Hunter, who first played with Barker at Ronnie’s in 1980 before moving to New York to join the Gil Evans band.
Born in Panama and raised in New York, Cobham’s explosive, virtuosic technique powered seminal recordings with Miles Davis (Bitches Brew, Live-Evil, A Tribute to Jack Johnson) and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire), before he became a pioneering bandleader with classics like Spectrum. A trailblazer in electronic percussion and a collaborator with jazz, funk, and rock legends from George Benson to the Grateful Dead, Cobham brings his unmatched energy to Barker’s intricate big-band arrangements, joined by stellar soloists including saxophonist Chris Hunter.
