Steve Smith & Vital Information
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Former drummer for Journey, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and one of Modern Drummer Readers Poll’s Top 25 Drummers of All Time, Steve Smith has been touring and recording with Vital Information since 1983.
The group’s latest incarnation features virtuoso keyboardist Manuel Valera, a Guggenheim Fellow and Grammy-nominated artist from Havana, Cuba, and electric bassist Janek Gwizdala, one of today’s most in-demand players.
The group's 2025 album, New Perspective, reinvents songs from across Smith’s career - including three Journey classics (“Open Arms,” “Who’s Crying Now,” “Don’t Stop Believin’”), Michael Brecker’s Steps Ahead tune “Sumo”, reimagined Vital Information tracks, and two new originals - all with fresh arrangements that showcase the trio’s virtuosity and creativity.
Rooted in bebop swing but unafraid to explore exotic South Indian Carnatic rhythms and adventurous, funk-driven takes on jazz standards, the band thrives on improvisation, surprise, and collective musical conversation.
A rare opportunity to experience high-level musicianship, infectious joy, and electrifying interplay from one of jazz-fusion’s most enduring and inventive ensembles.
