His fourth solo studio album, CREAM pays tribute to the two forces that shaped his musical upbringing: hip hop and the jazz‑drumming lineage of Elvin Jones.
Across eight instrumentals, Overall reimagines classics by The Notorious B.I.G., Wu‑Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, Digable Planets, and Juvenile, transforming them into rhythmically daring, witty, and expressive jazz standards.
In his liner notes, Dilla Time author Dan Charnas frames the project as a bold expansion of jazz’s relationship to hip‑hop, calling CREAM “perhaps the first of its kind”, a collection that mines iconic rap songs for their rhythmic and harmonic possibilities. Overall describes the album as a return to pure ensemble playing: no edits, overdubs, samples, or drum machines, just musicians in a room interpreting the rap records that shaped him.
CREAM grew out of years of touring and a desire to strip back Overall’s electronic‑heavy setup in favour of a live, Rudy Van Gelder‑style recording approach. In reframing hip‑hop anthems through jazz, Overall continues his boundary‑pushing dialogue between the two genres, offering a fresh, deeply musical conversation that has been evolving since the 90s.
