Catching the Light: The Lyrics of Clive James

Greenwich Theatre, SE10 8ES , [Venue Details]

Best known for his light-hearted columns and television appearances, Clive James was also a remarkable lyricist.

Sunday,
26 Apr 2026
@6.00pm

Working with composer Pete Atkin, he created songs that are tender, wry and always deeply human — mini-masterpieces that feel like a friend opening up, sharing joys, regrets and earthy observations of everyday life.

Kiwi vocalist Tim Benton brings these songs to life with a warm, lived-in baritone, accompanied by jazz-tinged piano arrangements from leading UK musical director Simon Wallace. Between songs, Tim explores Clive’s fascinating backstory — from the brash “kid from Kogarah” to one of Britain’s most distinctive cultural voices. Part live music gig, part memoir, Catching the Light is an unhurried Sunday evening experience of song and storytelling — even if you’ve never encountered Clive or Pete before. You’ll come away impressed by a talent Clive modestly described as “turning a phrase until it catches the light”.
