Balimaya Project
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Balimaya Project is the London-based big-band jazz ensemble led by percussionist Yahael Camara Onono, fusing Mandé West African traditions with contemporary jazz, Afrobeat, and the sounds of Black London.
Formed in 2019, the group brings together up to 16 musicians from across generations and backgrounds, exploring rhythm, melody, and improvisation rooted in both African heritage and diasporic experience.
Their debut album Wolo So established them as a force on the global jazz scene, drawing comparisons to Fela Kuti and Sun Ra for its scale, polyrhythms, and horn arrangements. When The Dust Settles (2023) deepened the band’s exploration of personal and collective experience, while 2025’s Calima fused West African jazz with Afro-Colombian rhythms in a cross-continental musical dialogue.
Balimaya Project is a live experience built on collaboration, and the power of shared rhythms. Expect a celebration of culture, community, and the contemporary pulse of African diasporic music.
