Malcolm Earle Smith is one of the UK’s most versatile and expressive jazz trombonists, vocalists, and educators, celebrated for his deep command of the jazz tradition from early New Orleans styles to bebop and beyond.
After studies at the Guildhall School of Music, he joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, quickly rising to the lead trombone chair. His career since has spanned collaborations with many of the UK’s most respected artists, including John Dankworth, Henry Lowther, Liam Noble, Digby Fairweather, and international soul legends Martha Reeves and Ronnie Spector. He has also toured extensively with Bryan Ferry, appearing on the albums As Time Goes By and The Jazz Age, as well as Ferry’s soundtrack for The Great Gatsby.
