Matt Holborn: Giants of Jazz Violin

Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]

Join jazz violinist Matt Holborn leading a band of some of the UK’s most in-demand jazz musicians, paying tribute to the big three of jazz violin: Joe Venuti, Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith.

Sunday,
17 May 2026
@1.00pm

Matt Holborn is a London-based jazz violinist: he leads the London Django Collective, plays with musical comedian Bill Bailey and has toured extensively across the UK and internationally, performing with many of today's leading exponents of Django Reinhardt's music.

Some would describe Joe Venuti as the great-grandfather of jazz violin as we know it, finding new ways to bring the violin into the world of jazz in the 1920s. Venuti paved the way for the world-famous French violinist Stéphane Grappelli. While Grappelli was forming the Quintette du Hot Club de France in Paris in the mid-1930s, Stuff Smith was playing in and around New York with a who’s who of jazz musicians of the time.

Join us for a show dedicated to these giants of jazz violin, featuring some of the tunes that made them famous, interpretations of their original compositions, and music from Matt’s 2025 album For Stuff.
