Equally at home performing with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Simon Rattle at the Barbican as he is leading his own groups at international jazz festivals, Heinen’s music draws together jazz, classical and contemporary influences with striking originality.
Raised in a family of classical musicians and introduced to jazz through the music of John Coltrane and Bill Evans, Heinen has developed a compositional voice shaped by influences ranging from Duke Ellington and Wayne Shorter to Bartók and Ligeti. A professor of jazz piano and composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, he has written for artists and ensembles spanning DJ Vadim to Camerata Alma Viva, while recent projects include the premiere of his work Past/Present at Wigmore Hall.
For this performance, Heinen is joined by rising bass star Kobe Heath Ngugi and internationally acclaimed drummer Gene Calderazzo, whose remarkable career has included collaborations with Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard and Radiohead. Together, the trio performs original music from Heinen’s forthcoming album Daydreamer, alongside fresh arrangements of compositions by John Coltrane, Horace Silver and Ahmad Jamal
