Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Mama Terra return with Inner Space, the latest release from the Glasgow jazz-soul collective led by pianist and composer Marco Cafolla alongside saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski.
Following their acclaimed debut The Summoned and a breakthrough year that saw them tipped by Jazz FM, nominated for Breakthrough Act at the Jazz FM Awards and signed to Acid Jazz Records, the group continue to carve out a singular space in contemporary UK jazz.
Bringing a new an invigorated take on spiritual jazz with a sprinkling of soul, Mama Terra draw on influences spanning John and Alice Coltrane, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and McCoy Tyner through to Kamasi Washington, Erykah Badu and Robert Glasper.
Recorded between Glasgow, Los Angeles and Brooklyn, Inner Space explores themes of transformation, stillness and connection. The album’s titular centrepiece unfolds as a spiritual meditation where fear, beauty and calm coexist; soprano saxophone and violin drift above a constantly evolving rhythmic landscape before culminating in the voice of Conrad Roberts, recalling his appearance on Miles Davis’s Live Evil in a fitting nod to the centenary of the trumpet legend’s birth.
With Rachel Lightbody on vocals, Ross Saunders on upright bass, Doug Hough on drums and Mikey Owers on trombone, Mama Terra have built a reputation for for deeply human, immersive live performances.
