Winner of the British Jazz Award for Best Tenor Saxophonist, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and recently shortlisted for Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, Themen remains as distinctive, witty and brilliantly unpredictable as ever.
This living legend has famously combined his role as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey as well as recordings with Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce and even Bing Crosby. The Observer famously described him as “one of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians” - praise that still rings true today.
For this performance, Themen leads his superb organ trio featuring acclaimed organist Pete Whittaker (The Nigel Price Organ Trio) and drummer George Double (Shirley Bassey, Jack Jones). Together, they deliver groove-led reimaginings of quirky curiosities from the jazz canon, the perfect vehicle for the twinkly mischief of this genuine grandee of British jazz.
