Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Miles Davis famously said,"You can tell the history of jazz in four words: Louis Armstrong. Charlie Parker." Few musicians changed the course of jazz as profoundly as Charlie 'Bird' Parker.
Through his extraordinary improvisation, harmonic innovation and unmistakable sound, Parker helped define bebop and laid the foundations for modern jazz.
The idea behind Supersax emerged in the early 1970s, when bassist Buddy Clark and saxophonist Med Flory began orchestrating Parker's original solos for a saxophone section and rhythm section. The resulting nine-piece ensemble debuted in 1972 and quickly gained international acclaim, bringing Bird's music to new audiences in a fresh and inventive format.
In 2013, saxophonist Alex Garnett created a UK incarnation of the project: London Supersax. Drawing on a lifelong admiration for Parker's music, Alex assembled an outstanding ensemble dedicated to celebrating Bird's enduring legacy through these remarkable arrangements.
Expect classic Parker repertoire including Cool Blues, Star Eyes, Lover Man, Salt Peanuts, Parker's Mood, A Night in Tunisia, Moose the Mooche and more.
