Saxophonist Tim Garland and pianist Geoffrey Keezer present Mezzo, a brand-new collaboration recorded in New York this spring, showcasing the extraordinary musical chemistry of two globally renowned improvisers at the height of their powers.
Their partnership spans over 25 years, from Garland’s acclaimed Made by Walking release on Chick Corea’s label through to the “Storms/Nocturnes” trio with Joe Locke. Now distilled into an intimate duo setting, their music reveals a deep, intuitive dialogue between two artists celebrated for both lyrical sensitivity and incendiary virtuosity.
At the heart of the project is the rare Mezzo-soprano saxophone - of which only 20 handmade instruments exist worldwide - featured alongside soprano sax and piano in a set that blends original compositions with reimagined works by Satie, Cole Porter and Mulgrew Miller. The result is a programme that moves fluidly between classical lyricism and contemporary jazz improvisation.
