Drawing from Carnatic music - the highly developed classical tradition of South India, built around intricate melodies, rhythms and improvisation - as well as North Indian Hindustani forms, Ramamurthy’s original compositions explore migration, heritage and cultural connection.
His acclaimed trio features bassist Damon Banks and drummer Sameer Gupta, two musicians whose own work spans continents and traditions. Together, the trio expands on traditional raga structures - the melodic frameworks at the heart of Indian classical music - through the spontaneity and interaction of jazz.
The group’s latest album, New Moon, centres around New Moon Suite, a four-part work inspired by ancestry, family and the lessons carried across generations. Commissioned through Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works programme, the piece reflects Ramamurthy’s journey between his Indian heritage and life as a multicultural artist.
Co-founder of the influential collective Brooklyn Raga Massive, Ramamurthy has performed on stages including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center.
