Darius Brubeck Quartet
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Darius Brubeck returns with the quartet he has led for almost 20 years, launching their new album Live Again after a run of sold-out concerts across France, Italy and the UK.
The programme brings together new, road-tested material with music from Brubeck’s South African years and familiar favourites from his father Dave Brubeck’s repertoire.
The quartet features saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, bassist Matt Ridley and drummer Wesley Gibbens, a line-up whose long musical relationship has developed into an instinctive, highly responsive way of playing together. Their repertoire moves between original compositions, South African jazz and the music of the Brubeck family legacy, including perennial favourites from the Dave Brubeck era.
For Darius, that legacy is a starting point rather than a destination. His years working and teaching in South Africa had a profound influence on his musical direction, and the quartet’s programmes regularly bring that material into conversation with his father’s compositions. Alongside new work, audiences can expect pieces including Take Five, Blue Rondo à la Turk and other familiar Brubeck repertoire.
