Solo Piano Series: Uri Caine
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Few pianists move between jazz and classical music with Uri Caine’s freedom and curiosity. For this solo performance, he brings together standards, variations, original compositions and spontaneous improvisations, allowing each piece to become the starting point for something new.
Born in Philadelphia, Caine began studying piano and composition as a teenager before playing with figures including Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Johnny Coles and Grover Washington. Since moving to New York in 1985, he has built an extraordinary body of work, recording more than 30 albums as a leader and working across jazz, contemporary classical and improvised music.
His classical projects have taken in Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Mahler, Wagner, Mozart, Verdi and Schumann, while his commissions include work for the Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra and Arditti Quartet. His own ensembles range from acoustic and electric trios to solo piano, with a Grammy nomination for The Othello Syndrome in 2009.
For Caine, the boundaries between these worlds are there to be played with. This is a rare chance to hear one of contemporary jazz’s most inventive pianists alone at the instrument, where the music can move wherever the moment takes it.
