The Bukky Leo Sextet
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]The Bukky Leo Sextet present music from his new album Burning Manifestation, plus his take on the classic sounds of Fela Kuti, Hugh Masakela, Will Onyearbor and Tony Allen.
Nigerian-born saxophonist, Bukky Leo began his musical journey in Lagos, where he was mentored by Afrobeat legend Tony Allen. Joining Fela Kuti’s band, he immersed himself in the foundations of Afrobeat. In 1982, Bukky Leo's path led him to London, where he became one of the forerunners of the acid jazz scene. A young A&R man called Gilles Peterson signed him to the newly formed Acid Jazz label. His first release 'Rejoice in Righteousness' went straight to number one in the rhythm and blues, dance and jazz charts.
Since the acid jazz days, he has remained loyal to his goal of making groundbreaking afro-centric grooves. This led to the creation of The Source - the band he toured extensively with and recorded a self-titled album, featured on the Club Africa 2 compilation on Strut records. In the mid-90s, he embarked on the definitive pilgrimage to Egypt where he laid down the intellectual and musical foundations for the formation of his band Black Egypt.
