Born in Divo, Côte d’Ivoire, she began performing at age 12 with the emblematic group Woya and later became the bassist for Zap Mama, touring the world and dazzling audiences across Europe and the U.S.
Since 2003, based in Brussels, Gallo has led her own ensembles - including the Manou Gallo Orchestra, Women Band, Groove Orchestra and Music Machine - blending African rhythms with funk, soul, and jazz in a modern, boundary-crossing sound. Her fifth album, Afro Bass Fusion, pays homage to the artists who inspired her, from Fela Kuti to Manu Dibango, and features collaborations with bass legends Christian McBride and Etienne Mbappé.
With her virtuosic slap-bass technique, commanding stage presence, and explosive groove, Manou Gallo has become one of the world’s leading female bassists, bringing the heart and soul of Africa to every performance.
